**To understand Antioxidants and their benefits, it is important to first understand Free Radicals and their potentially harmful affects on our bodies if left unbalanced.*

The creation of Free Radicals occurs when Oxygen splits into single atoms with unpaired electrons. Electrons like being paired up; so naturally when this split occurs, the single electrons frantically go on a search for another electron to pair with. During this process, the unpaired electron often steals an electron from the nearest stable atom or molecule setting off a chain reaction creating new unpaired electrons called Free Radicals. As the creation of Free Radicals continues throughout the body, it can do quite a bit of damage to cell membranes as well as other structures. Recent studies have also linked Free Radicals to a variety of disease (including heart disease and certain cancers) and aging.*

It is important to also understand that the loss of electrons are a normal biological function. This can be found in our bodies ability to metabolize or even do something as simple as turning the Oxygen we breathe in into the Carbon Dioxide that we exhale out. In normal circumstances, our bodies use and create Antioxidants to balance these Free Radicals during these processes, limiting the creation of these unpaired electrons to function as they should during these normal functions. However, Free Radicals can become harmful when the body does not have enough Antioxidants to balance out these chain reactions. This imbalance is also referred to as Oxidative Stress. *

There are many factors that are linked to the Risk of Oxidative Stress; here are just some according to various studies:

-Improper Diet

-Obesity

-Stress

-Environmental Conditions such as Pollution

-Smoking Cigarets or Other Tobacco Products

-Alcohol Consumption

-Certain Medications

-Exposure to Pesticides

Although there are many factors that play into Oxidative Stress, recent studies have also shown a few ways to reduce the risk of long term damage from this occurrence.

One being, maintaining a balanced diet rich in Nutrients and Antioxidants commonly found in Fruits and Vegetables. *
